The origins of the vest (or waistcoat in the UK) can be precisely dated. King Charles II of England introduced the vest as a part of the “correct formal dressing” when restoring the British Monarchy.

In October of 1666 the King, by decree, created a fashion for clothing in which the Vest was de rigueur. During the 17th And 18th Centuries, vests were very elaborated and extremely ornate, in bright colors and very sophisticated and flashy. In the last part of the 19th Century the fashion slowly started to change and vests became more subtle and simple. They started to be of the color of the suit an much more simple.

The vest was a required part of business etiquette until the mid 20th Century, then it started to decline and its use became rare.
